Description
There are still flooded areas in the Missouri River bottom lands after a very stormy May and a June that started out much the same way. The gravel road that leads to my house has washed out with deeper ruts than I have seen in all the years I have lived here. The old barn in this scene was what drew me to the composition to begin with. Yet, it has become somewhat lost in the greater landscape. The leading lines of the power poles and lines and the rows of crops bring the viewer into the visual story. The ominous sky seems to compress the bluffs and hills above the river into a definite horizon. The bottoms have become an integral part of my life over the years. I had a friend who was quite old. Her grandfather farmed on the North side of the river and sold his wheat to a riverboat at a spot right near this scene called the Red Bridge. The interesting thing is that his fields were behind the viewer and the riverboat came up from the direction we are looking in this scene. The farm land that you see floods because it was once part of the greater river. It was the same water that Lewis and Clark navigated.
