The peony, a most elegant and beautiful bloom has come to be the symbol for emotions and for nations. It has symbolized China throughout the ages and in western culture it symbolizes bashfulness in Floriography or the Language of Flowers. During the reign of Queen Victoria a code was developed using flowers as the means of communication. It was called the Language of Flowers. A person who wanted to send a secret message would give someone a small bouquet called a tussie-mussie. It was used by to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken. There are those who still practice it today.
