Artist's Description

In spring in Missouri, fallow fields are blanketed with purple wildflowers. There are two varieties of the same genus that put on this display, henbit and purple dead nettle. I have heard differing stories about the origins of these mint family plants. It has been said that immigrants brought them to use for food and medicine. Another story has them showing up in grass seed brought in from Europe in the 1920s. Subsequently, they have gone wild creating this floral harbinger of the season. Young leaves henbit dead-nettle are considered to be edible raw or cooked. They have been used as additions to salads or as a potherb. Medicinal uses for these plants include as an antirheumatic, an excitant, a fever-reducer, a laxative, a stimulant, and they have agents that induce sweating.

Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
