Now, after this long day of high clouds
and winds shivering fire-bronzed leaves steeped
in sun, our earth has spun down to dusk
and great scarves of starlings have flown to fill
white oaks clothing these hills. Our chores all done,
we eat a a supper of leftovers
and talk over the work of next week.

Seeing ripe fruit hang black on evening boughs
against a flaming sky, I know my mother's
beauty lives in my children. Everything
is a prayer. My vanished parents read my lines
and answered their old ones through me. I write
my children of simple things afflicted
by the ordinary chaos of the heart.
