The story of Hansel and Gretel gives us the notion that houses ought to be made of gingerbread and decorated extensively with icings and candies. Such gingerbread houses became a holiday decoration throughout Europe and North America.
Gingerbread in architecture usually refers to decorative embellishments that were popularized during the latter part of the Victorian era. That is to say, during the long and influential reign of Queen Victoria from about 1870, after the death of Prince Albert, until the turn of the century. Three factors heavily contributed to the use of gingerbread. First, it became easy to manufacture in quantities. Next, the gaining prominence of the railroads made it easy to get the goods from the factories in the East to anywhere in the country to a job site. And lastly, the mass production of paint made it viable for one to choose two, three or more colors to decorate the gingerbread and the rest of the house.
