La Liberté éclairant le monde, Liberty Enlightening the World now known to all as the Statue of Liberty was a gift to the American people by the French artist and sculptor Frederic Bartholdi. A controversy emerged when it was discovered that Bartholdi had no intention of providing a base for the statue and that the bill for the base was to be the responsibility of the American people/government. The times were hard economically and there was very little money for any kind of public project. It took a number of years to get things sorted out but the base was eventually built largely through funds donated in jars placed on the bar of saloons.
