William, I can only image how wonderful it would be to live in a place where these gorgeous blossoms are hanging from the trees. Truly, it would be a tropical paradise. voted

William Fields replied:

Thank you Cheri. I suspect that they'd do pretty well in your neck of the woods. Perhaps you should start hanging them from your trees?

Artist's Description

Nobile means noble in Latin and in modern Italian. The flower pictured is a Dendrobium nobile or noble dendrobium. Dendrobium are a very large genus of orchids that range from the Himalaya to Southeast Asia to Australia and beyond. They grow on trees or other objects non-parasitically gathering their moisture and nutrients from the air and sometimes from debris that settles around the roots. Orchids of this type are referred to as epiphytes. There are another group of dendrobium that grow on rocks called lipophytes. Dendrobium were first identified by a Westerner in the 1700s. They have been a part of Chinese medicine for much longer. Owning and caring for dendrobium orchids is an uncomplicated task for the home gardener. And not only are they lovely to see, you can garnish your food with them as they are edible.

I try to put everything I have learned from every great teacher and through every mistake I have made into each and every piece with as much passion as I have for art and for life itself. Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
