William, don't know how you acquired the original photo - but ever the spinner of yarns - you've brought it alive for the rest of us. What a character he must have been! voted

William Fields replied:

Thanks Cheri. I was given it by the great, great nephew of Mrs. Beach when he lost a game of poker to me in a bar in Mozambique... NOT!!!

Artist's Description

On a night in Paris in 1928, Hemingway went out with Archibald MacLeish and his wife. At home in his apartment at Rue Férou around 2 in the morning, while relieving himself Papa reached for the cord to flush the loo and instead grabbed the cord for the skylight bringing it down on his head. MacLeish drove him to the American Hospital at 63 Boulevard Victor Hugo where he required nine stitches. He told his editor at Scribner's that he wrapped his head in toilet paper to stop the bleeding. When news of the incident got into the press he received a message from Ezra Pound. "Haow the hellsufferin tomcats did you git drunk enough to fall upwards thru the blithering skylight!!!" The original of this image (minus the colorization, blood stains and other creative decisions) was taken a day or so later. The lady in green is Sylvia Beach the owner of bookstore where they stand called Shakespeare and Company.

I try to put everything I have learned from every great teacher and through every mistake I have made into each and every piece with as much passion as I have for art and for life itself. Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
