Artist's Description

The title comes from the Langston Hughes poem, but of course, this image is about a different kind of lost hope. Out on the prairie of the Eastern Plains of Colorado, some farmer or rancher tried and lost. The hull of what was once someone's dream is all that remains. The overgrown tumbleweeds, the snow and the angle of early morning light came together around this old, abandoned place to inspire my vision for this image. In some way, the ruin is analogous to the Anasazi ruins in that we do not know who lived here or why they left when they did. I did not trespass the ruin, but I am convinced that if I had, I would have found some artifacts of the lives of the former tenants. Perhaps a broken plate, a bullet casing, a kitchen trash pile containing old bottles, and Spam cans are still waiting for some scholar or just some curiosity seeker to come along and dig up to evaluate?
