Description
Three on the Beach is an image that pretty much composed itself. The three old pilings of the title provided a perfect leading line into the rocky beach and the sea beyond. The tidal wash on the lower left of the picture gives the image visual interest without being obtrusive. The same can be said for the hint of clouds on the horizon. The scene is at the outward end of Napatree Point in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. The point is a one and a half mile long spit that reaches out into the ocean. At its widest it is less than fifty yards. At the end of the point there are the remains of an old fort that dates to World War I. The fort was intended to provide protection from German submarines. When I was a boy there was a legend that we all believed about a sunken enemy sub off the end of the point. I recently found that the story was concocted. What actually happened was that a German submarine that was considered friendly was being escorted by tug boats . The sub inadvertently hit one of the tugs and it sank drowning four of the five people on board. The submarine then returned to its berth in New London, Connecticut. The eerie look of this place lends itself to cooked up stories and I was tempted to spin one, but decided to tell it as it actually happened for a change.

Wonderful composition, subject and treatment William! Although you didn't spin a yarn, your image allows the viewer's imagination to run wild with stories of their own. v/f
William Fields replied:
Barbara, thanks very much. This picture is currently under consideration for a book cover. So it may yet be tied to some kind of story. Although, I believe the book is non-fiction; )
