Fantastic image Bill! I can smell the forging process and feel the heat from the fire! My grandfather was a blacksmith/ironworker so perhaps I'm predisposed to my affection for this image. The sparks are amazing! Love the Wadsworth excerpt also. v/f

William Fields replied:

Thanks very much Barbara! You have made my day!

Love to see a true craftsman! Nice use of selective color. v.8

William Fields replied:

Thanks very much Kate! Coincidentally, your family name is common in our town and the smith may be related to some Purdys.

I love the use of selective coloring on this great piece, William! Becoming a lost art like coopers, smithies, etc. It takes a talent to do this hard laborious task, and one would have to be quite creative. Your creativity in this capture, description, and superlative presentation is remarkable! Thanks for sharing this unique piece with us. Fave and vote and tweet and FB and g+1 on this masterpiece in both arts!

William Fields replied:

Randy, thanks very much. You're more than kind!

Artist's Description

UNDER a spreading chestnut tree
The village smithy stands;
The smith, a mighty man is he,
With large and sinewy hands;
And the muscles of his brawny arms 5
Are strong as iron bands.

Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend,
For the lesson thou hast taught!
Thus at the flaming forge of life 45
Our fortunes must be wrought;
Thus on its sounding anvil shaped
Each burning deed and thought!
Excerpted from The Village Blacksmith by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

My friend John is a smith among other things. He makes all sorts of things in his forge. I recently asked him to make a set of tongs for picking up a burning log in my fireplace. he made a dandy set and I await cold weather so I can use them.

All of my works are fine art photographs. The Fine Art America algorithms do not allow photos to be sold as original art so in order to offer the original piece, my work must be listed as di...

I try to put everything I have learned from every great teacher and through every mistake I have made into each and every piece with as much passion as I have for art and for life itself. Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea.
