This is Rosie, an African Grey parrot. She belongs to a friend. I have been studying still life from an art history perspective in the last few months and I had an image in mind that I wanted to capture. I had seen a picture called "Still Life with Parrot" by William Merritt Chase in one of my books. I was somewhat smitten with the image and I wanted to replicate it in a contemporary way. As I prepared my equipment and props for the shoot I remembered an old fan in the garage. I thought it would add a bit of nostalgia to the image. I feel the picture is successful and the fan definitely helped. The teapot on the left side of the picture is the work of a ceramics master and friend Tom Meuninck. Tom lives and works in the northern Indiana town of North Liberty which is near Elkhart. The teacups are Japanese as is the vase. I stopped and picked some wild flowers on my way to the shoot. I hope you enjoy this as much as I have in the conceptualizing, planning and execution phases. Thanks al...

the ol' African Grey, the smartest of parrots, beautiful but of course I can't find as beautiful as my own green cheek conure Sidney (went with the male/female name since, well you know...) excellent matching of colors, his features with table cloth, his eye with tea set, the blush tip of feather against pillows (real subtle... almost as subtle as the green of cup in haze of green pillow and green table cloth shadow crowned by relatively brilliant green plants), and kinetically the propellers of fan and his wings flight in potential tension... good sensitive work, congrats

Love this piece William! You've created the perfect setting to feature Rosie. The texture /design and color in the teapot ( a beautiful piece) and cloth on the table are similar to Rosie's. The antique fan adds another layer of interest and character to the image. The red background is soft enough not to overpower the composition and lends warmth and depth, which is beautifully complimented by the foliage and wildflowers.Cudos! A great job. fav/v66 CFc31/fb/g+

William, Fantastic photo love the details of all of the various images in this great photo. The details on the African Grey Parrot are remarkable it is fascinating how you can see the details in the feathers so clearly and the colors on the parrot's back ranging from the shadows being cast on him to the natural colors of his feathers and head. Excellent details of the images in back of the parrot and I love how you have constructed your images around the parrot. Nice write up on how you let your creativity come up with this beautiful idea. Excellent photo, tweet, google and FB promoted
William Fields replied:
Thanks very much John for your thoughtful comments and support.

This is a wonderful composition and photo, William! I enjoy the limited range of colors and the way the fan blade echoes the curve of Rosie's wing. That teapot is also very beautiful. Everything works together perfectly in this still life. v / g+
William Fields replied:
Thanks very much Julie, your comments are a warm breeze on the beach of life. Thanks

William - you put so much thought and effort into your works of art...it's no wonder you enjoy successes such as this still life...thoroughly enjoyed the description. The colors in this image are stunning and the composition is beautiful. The variety of surfaces and the detail in each element is wonderful. The lighting is great. P.S. I l love Rosie and the fan equally...is that wrong? V/F
William Fields replied:
Ann, you've made my day. Thanks very much. I think your mechanical/animistic love is just fine. I'll tell Rosie she has some competition... from a fan; )
