Wonderful print! F/V

William Fields replied:

Thanks Canis! Digging this one up has inspired me to do some more. Just have to find a market that has whole fish. Not readily available here in the hinterlands.

Artist's Description

Gyotaku is the traditional fish printing process used in Japan to record a fisherman's catch. The fish is inked, a piece of rice or mulberry paper is carefully laid over the fish and the image is transferred through rubbing and patting. The eye is usually removed prior to the printing process as it would just be a black blob if printed. Eyes are hand painted after the print is dry. The finished prints often are hung from strings suspended from the ceiling in bait and tackle shops. The two fish in this print were made using the same animal. It was a type of sea bass called red snapper in California. Although, it is not a true red snapper.

Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
