We climbed the arid and dusty hillside, up through scrub oaks, junipers, sage and rabbitbrush. When we reached the top, we felt the refreshing breezes rising up and we saw the views that graced so many of his paintings. At this spot on a forgotten knoll his ashes were scattered. The stone marker proclaims MD His Place. And, we knew it was very much his place. We could feel his presence in the ways he inspired and in the way we were filled awe and respect. Maynard Dixon was one of the most important creators of Western Art and perhaps one of the least known. His work appeared on countless magazine covers, Sunset Magazine in particular, but many others as well. He was married to Dorthea Lange. His circle included other luminaries like Milford Zornes. I never met him. He died one month before I was born, but I feel as if he�s as much a part of my life as he would be if he were my grandfather. MD His Place is dedicated to the memory of Maynard Dixon.
