Description
Hermann, Missouri is where I live. It is a town with tremendous natural and manmade beauty. The town was founded by a German Settlement Society that came overland from Philadelphia in 1832. The site was chosen because of its semblance to the Rhine Valley in Germany. The founders began making wine from the native grapes and developed a new varietal that before long was winning gold medals as far afield as Vienna, Austria. By the time of prohibition, Hermann was the second largest wine producing area in North America. Vines from Hermann were used to establish Napa Valley as a wine producing area. Hermann root stock was shipped by the carload to Europe to save European wines for the world when there was an infestation of phylloxera that threatened to destroy all the vineyards in France, Italy, Germany and elsewhere. Today Hermann is a tourist destination in large part because we still produce quality wines and even more so because it is the prettiest town in America.
