This courthouse in Hermann, Missouri, the county seat for Gasconade County is the only privately funded courthouse in America. The funds for the building were left in a will by Charles Eitzen who was a merchant of substantial wealth. Mr. Eitzen made much of his money selling and transporting iron ore on the Missouri River. The courthouse sits on a bluff above the river and is currently undergoing restoration true to its historic significance. The building was completed in 1898. There had been a lesser building on the site before. The first county commissioner was Daniel Morgan Boone, son of the pioneer.
