Description
I love our little town. Hermann, Missouri is a very special place. It is a center of wine making that dates back to the 1800s. During that century, European vineyards were in dire straits due to an infestation of a louse that was destroying the vines. George Hussmann of Hermann sent carloads of native grape cuttings to Europe and saved those wines for the world. I shot this around 10 pm when traffic had died down. The building on the right in the foreground is our Festhalle. It is a Bavarian style drinking hall for festivals and is the largest in the United States. The building on the left is the old Star Mill. It currently houses a machine shop and is used largely for warehousing locally produced wines. Near the center of the image, one can see the historic Gasconade County courthouse. It is the only privately funded courthouse in the US. It was built with funds donated by a local entrepreneur and it set off a debate that still rages today about which town the courthouse should be in. If you come to Missouri, stop by and see us and enjoy a glass or two of world class wine, a sausage and sauerkraut and stay awhile.

Thanks Kate! Hermann has a population of 2400 and there are more than 110 buildings on the National Historic Register including the oldest saloon west of the Mississippi.
