Description
There is a field that I pass along Missouri Highway 100 that overlooks forests, farms and fields. I have photographed at that sight on many occasions always looking for "The Shot". This morning the dawn light was pretty special and I thought I would find some great vistas at this field. I parked the car and walked out into the field headed toward this fence gate. It's the highest point in the field and I thought I'd have the best views from up there. When I got to the gate, the sweet morning light was so fine reflecting off the fence, I started shooting the fence and forgot about the larger view. In the end, I did take several variations of the vista and will work on those soon. But it was this little stretch of fence and the sound of the Cole Porter song in my head that drove my passion. I hope you like what I found.
Wildcat Kelley, looking mighty pale
Was standing by the Sheriff's side
And when the Sheriff said, "I'm sending you to jail
Wildcat raised his head and cried
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above
Don't fence me in
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love
Don't fence me in
Let me be by myself in the evening breeze
Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees
Send me off forever but I ask you please
Don't fence me in
Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle
Underneath the Western skies
On my Cayuse, let me wander over yonder
Till I see the mountains rise
I want to ride to the ridge where the West commences
Gaze at the moon till I lose my senses
Can't look at hobbles and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in
Wildcat Kelley, back again in town
Was sitting by his sweetheart's side
And when his sweetheart said, "Come on, let's settle down
"Wildcat raised his head and cried

William, Fantastic capture of this fence and the photo has such remarkable depth to it that it just draws you in and makes you continue to look down the fence and the plains on the side of it. Remarkable sky shot and great details in the foreground and background. Excellent photo, voted, google and tweet promoted

William this is wonderful! I love the dark dramatic sky and the texture of the wood and wire fence against the grass! v/f/fb

My favorite part of your narrative, William - "When I got to the gate, the sweet morning light was so fine reflecting off the fence, I started shooting the fence and forgot about the larger view." You got lost in the moment...I love those words because that is exactly when so many beautiful moments in life "happen". Great title for this image. v/f
William Fields replied:
Ann, thanks for your kindness and understanding. It's very difficult to explain these kinds of things to those who are not artists.
Jim Cook
Really like this one! Your description reminded me of a description by Ansel Adams of a tree stump that he passed everyday without giving much notice to it until the sun hit it just right. Very well done. V,F,G+
William Fields replied:
Jim, thanks very much for the kind comments. I don't think I can compare myself to AA but am very honored that you thought of him.
Geeta Biswas

Beautiful shot!! One of my favorite songs and I like Willie Nelson's version.
William Fields replied:
Eric, thanks! One of my favorites as well. I like Willie's version but I really like Asleep at the Wheel's take on it.
