Description
This picture is about the sound of a train whistle. There is an obvious close relationship visually with two other images that I posted recently; Song of the Open Road and Somewhere There on That Desolate Plain. I submit that this picture is different in that it is about something unseen. There is in fact a sliver of a train in the picture. But, that is not what the picture is about.
In a number of American songs about trains, the train itself is represented by the sound of the whistle. If a song could be seen, excluding video treatment of course, the trains in these tunes would be invisible. It is the heartbroken men and women that we see in our mind’s eye. The train is ever missing except for its forlorn whistle blowing in the night.
Here are some examples of those kinds of songs.
I hear the train a comin'
It's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when,
I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone..
When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son,
Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns.
But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
When I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry..
Well if they freed me from this prison,
If that railroad train was mine
I bet I'd move it on a little farther down the line
Far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay
And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away....
From the song Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash and Gordon Jenkins
Listen to that Duquesne whistle blowing
Blowing like it's gonna sweep my world away
I wanna stop at Carbondale and keep on going
That Duquesne train gon' rock me night and day
Listen to that Duquesne whistle blowing
Blowing like it's gon' blow my blues away
You old rascal, I know exactly where you're going
I'll lead you there myself at the break of day
Listen to that Duquesne whistle blowing
Blowing like she's blowing right on time
From the song Duqesne Whistle by Bob Dylan
If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a 100 miles
A 100 miles, a 100 miles, a 100 miles, a 100 miles
You can hear the whistle blow a 100 miles
From the song 500 Miles by Hedy West adapted from traditional folk songs
I can hear that whistle blowin',
I see that stationmaster, too,
If there's a poor boy on the street,
Then let him have my seat
'Cause tonight I'll be staying here with you.
Throw my ticket out the window,
Throw my suitcase out there, too,
Throw my troubles out the door,
I don't need them any more
'Cause tonight I'll be staying here with you.
From the song Tonight I’ll be Staying Here With You by Bob Dylan
So I ask with some trepidation and a modicum of melancholy; do you hear that lonesome whistle blowing?

William, Definitely can hear that lonely whistle blowing through out this melancholy scene. For me, that glimmering sun and the fading light meandering through the landscape is representational of the sound echoing there, loudly at first, then tapering off to a low moan in the distance. Perfect choice of song lyrics to accompany this one! V/F

Wow stunning work William! The lighting is perfect and emotion is intense :) Love the large tree juxtaposed with the smaller tree in the background. Fav/Vote

This image speaks a thousand words, I can see an album cover in this. Nice shot, V!

Thank you Justin! You aren't a musician are you? I think we could make a deal; )
