Description
The russet leaves of the sycamore
Lie at last on the valley floor
By the autumn wind swept to and fro
Like ghosts in a tale of long ago.
From the poem The Last Days by George Sterling
I have driven as much as 100 miles to make pictures in a given area only to come home with an image of a tree.
On a February midday in blasting bright light I came upon this magnificent tree balanced against the bronzed bracken of its background. I at once was reminded of the beautifully mottled sycamores painted by Andrew Wyeth and set about capturing the spirit of the tree in a way that might assume to approach a smidgeon of the spirit of Mr. Wyeths pictures. The most well known of Wyeths sycamores is titled Sycamore and Hunter, dated 1943, but the one that resides in my heart and imagination is called simply Sycamore which was painted in 1982.
I dont know if I accomplished my goal but I do know that when I reviewed my work for the day, this image stood out among all the frames I shot. What an amazing gift it is to find such a fine specimen in the midst of all the wrong conditions. Such a simple subject as a sycamore stands alone among all the confusion around it. I am truly blessed to be able to do this work, all the while drinking the beauty of the world around us.

William, your admiration of the world around you comes across nicely in this composition, as well as your nod to Wyeth. I find the same reality based focus, which borders on abstraction if one considers the sculptural form of the sycamore itself. Allowing your subject to provide the "light" is also interesting and commands attention. voted
William Fields replied:
Cheri, I think you understand my intent and inner thoughts amazingly. I treasure our friendship and deeply appreciate your kind comments always.
