Very cool image and processing William! I really like the grittiness in this image and I think it suits it very well. I also like how the image has many different elements to it, giving a story line. Nicely done. v.

William Fields replied:

Thank you very much Matt! Appreciate your support

Awesome!!! Love the processing!

William Fields replied:

Thanks G&C, I think part of it is the available (and very weird) lighting in the store. My exposure was a little long and hand held so there's a softness to the overall image that I think contrasts well with the hardness of the subject.

Artist's Description

I came upon this swordfish in a grocery store. It was laying upon a container of ice and two young men were cutting up the steaks. All in all, it was a fairly festive scene. I took several pictures, but I could never get settled on the celebratory atmosphere that prevailed. This great fish was the focus of my interest and it was dead. I somehow had to find a way to convey that without seeming maudlin. There can be a kind of beauty in death that transcends our emotion around the basic concept. Although, at base this picture is about food, it is certainly about something more.

I try to put everything I have learned from every great teacher and through every mistake I have made into each and every piece with as much passion as I have for art and for life itself. Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
