This reminds me of an etching, this is so beautiful-so many details that are cast with wonderful light

William Fields replied:

Thanks Chris. Interestingly enough, I spent a number of years as a print maker and etchings were a major part of my efforts.

Artist's Description

The triumphal arch in Washington Square, Greenwich Village, New York City was built to commemorate the father of our country, George Washington. It was modeled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris which is the crypt for Napoleon Bonaparte. The structure was erected initially in 1889 of plaster and wood. Three years later it was rebuilt using tuckahoe marble. In 1918 two statues of Washington were added on the north side.

This image uses an unconventional crop that was composed this way in the camera. By pressing the subject against the left side of the frame, I feel that the arch opening itself becomes the subject. For those with a metaphysical bent, I have photographed nothing.

Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
