Deer shed their horns each year, if lucky you can find them in the woods. Some with permits to cut firewood in National Forests find and sell them...

William Fields replied:

Thanks for the feature Bob and Nadine. I have a large single antler that I found in our woods a few years back. I had a man make a basket with it. He wove the basket around the antler and used the horn itself for the base.

Artist's Description

These antlers are from a Colorado mule deer. They were sent to me by a friend who lives near Denver. My friend doesn’t hunt so I don’t know with any certainty where the horn came from.

He had scouted this spot in summer trying to find the best place to ambush a trophy sized buck. Then the weather was warm, his dreams were large and his imagination fecund. He planned everything he could bring to mind. He chose his rifle and ammo. He found clothes that he thought would protect him and made room in his freezer for the meat he’d bring home. And all the while, he waits.

Then he hears a snort. He raises his eyes...

I try to put everything I have learned from every great teacher and through every mistake I have made into each and every piece with as much passion as I have for art and for life itself. Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
