An interesting capture, William! I like the overall tone of the image and, above all, the excellent process used. Very good job! g+ T L V.

William Fields replied:

Pedro, thanks very much. Your kind words are of great value to me and I'm glad for our friendship.

William, I could sense that the words were the voice of experience - they were just too well-expressed to be otherwise. I, too, am glad for your friendship and that your story also has a happy ending :-)

William, I appreciate your almost monochromatic landscape with the cold steel gray of the frozen river cutting across, but especially appreciate the words of your original prose in the description, which startlingly brought back a striking memory for me. On a bitter January morning in Oklahoma, with 10" of snow on the ground and ice glazing the water, I came home alone from driving carpool and walking 4 miles on an indoor track, to try and dip a few leaves out of our pool, lost my balance and fell in fully clothed and tired from the walk. Knowing that I had only seconds to get to the surface and get myself out, brought on such a panic that the thought of it today, more than 20 years later, still causes my heart rate to increase. Your words of the animal in the water are completely, totally and vividly true. V/F

William Fields replied:

Cheri, thank you for that courageous recollection. I'm honored that you found so much in this picture and its story. I'm very glad that you are my friend and that your story has a happy ending.

i feel the desperation in the poem...V

William Fields replied:

A very astute observation Joan. I had a heart condition that made it very difficult for me to take a breath. I had surgery on December 19th to fix the problem and it was successful. The poem is an allegory for how I felt about breathing before my surgery. Thanks for your vote

Artist's Description

The bitterness of January
And the river choked with ice
A living creature who suddenly
Could not find its breath
In a land stained with
Amber, sienna and tarnished gold
The river was choked with ice

The animal of the water
Fought to stay alive
Every act was filled
With passion and with rage
Struggling to break free
Yet always biding time
In the river choked with ice

In the warmth of April
It would run free
Through the land like a colt
Inspired by the sun
Gasping breath and life
But now in bronzed banks
The river choked with ice
And the River Choked with Ice by William Fields

I try to put everything I have learned from every great teacher and through every mistake I have made into each and every piece with as much passion as I have for art and for life itself. Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...
