Description
In the 1950s, the automobile had become an affordable option and airlines were rapidly gaining market share for consumer travel. The passenger trains were on the way out.
The General Motors decided to invest in a viable a solution to the railroad dilemma. If passenger equipment could be built, operated and maintained at greatly reduced expense, the railroads might stand a better chance against their subsidized competitors.
GMs strategy involved adapting existing trains so that they would be high capacity, light weight, capable of high speed with low fuel consumption. Aluminium cars with air bellows suspension were derived from components and body stampings used by GM's truck and coach division.
A locomotive design based on the existing equipment was encased in a futuristic streamlined shroud. An usual wheel arrangement was employed and the drive train was geared for passenger operation. The results included a turret cabbed locomotive and a finned tail car with a small observation gallery. In1955 the GM Aerotrain was born.
This remaining Aerotrain is at the Saint Louis, Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, Missouri.

William, Most unusual! I've never seen any thing similar - looks like a bullet train! voted
William Fields replied:
Thanks very much Cheri! It really is an odd one. There are so many projects that the U.S. auto makers got involved with over the years; most of which we have never heard of.
