Artist's Description
This hat belonging to Maynard Dixon hangs on a wall in his Mount Carmel cabin as if it awaits him each day. I found the hat intriguing as part of a personal, but indirect connection. I studied with Milford Zornes who was a great American painter in his own right. Milford was associated with Maynard Dixon for years and ultimately bought the cabin from Dixon and lived there for some time. While driving through southern Utah, I saw the sign for Mount Carmel and told my wife this was where Milford and Maynard's cabin was. Soon we came to a small art gallery beside the road with a sign that said they were showing the work of "Living and Dead Artists". That was too intriguing to pass up. I told the gallery owner I had studied with Milford Zornes and that we were looking for his cabin. She told us that she now owned it and ran it as a museum with a self-guided tour. It was just up behind her gallery on the hillside. We bought tickets for the tour and went exploring. This old hat was a treat...
