Description
every one of them,
piled up as they are in a pose
in sleeping
in a unified harmony,
enter into magnificent music.
Each one's deepest place having been reached into,
cores leisurely lay themselves down.
From the poem Still Life by Minoru Yoshioka
Perdix, "Lord of the Pear Trees", was one of Athens most sacred kings, when he was cast into the sea to die, his goddess, Athena, carried him to heaven, in the form of a Partridge from whence came A Partridge in a Pear Tree.
In Greek and Roman mythology, pears are sacred to three goddesses. Hera or Juno to the Romans, Aphrodite, Venus to the Romans, and Pomona, a Roman goddess of gardens and trees.
In Europe, it was customary to plant a pear tree at a wedding. The longevity and fruitfulness of the trees were thought to give strength to the marriage and children. As each child arrived, an apple tree was planted for every boy, and a pear tree for each girl.
The ancient Chinese, believed that the pear was a symbol of immortality because pear trees live for a long time. In Chinese the word "li", means both "pear" and "separation". For this reason, tradition says that to avoid a separation, friends and lovers should not divide a pear.
The Pear symbolizes Immortality and Woman
When I painted more, I did not paint still life all that much. I do not know why. As I am more and more devoted to photography exclusively, I seem to be drawn more and more to still life. These pears were some we picked on Sunday from a friend's tree. The fruit is not treated with any chemicals and they have a less then perfect surface making them all the more interesting to my eye.

Great still life! Pears are my favorite I like them in ART (and in brandy :)) V
William Fields replied:
Thanks Elena, wish I could share some of these with you. They are a wonderful variety. I don't know for sure what they are but unlike many pears, they hold their firmness while being sweet and juicy. A definite treat. Can't seem to get enough of them. I'll be sorry when they're gone. Brandy is good

Nicely posed by your models & what an informative side bar William, V/F.
William Fields replied:
Thanks very much Pete. They were bitchy and I had to bribe them with promises of brandy baths. In the end they capitulated.
