Description
Our wagonette had topped a rise and in front of us rose the huge expanse of the moor, mottled with gnarled and craggy cairns and tors. A cold wind swept down from it and set us shivering. Somewhere there, on that desolate plain, was lurking this fiendish man, hiding in a burrow like a wild beast, his heart full of malignancy against the whole race which had cast him out. It needed but this to complete the grim suggestiveness of the barren waste, the chilling wind, and the darkling sky. Even Baskerville fell silent and pulled his overcoat more closely around him.
From The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapter 6 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
I have been a fan of Sherlock Holmes for more than 50 years. I had no trouble locating a passage that would yield a title for this picture. The image is at a location near where I live in Missouri. It is called the Berger Bottoms. The land is reclaimed river bottom that is now farmed. The levees were built in the early part of the 20th century and this "bottom land" which had been literally the bottom of the river now became arable, accessible and is planted to this day. In the early morning hours it is an eerie place particularly when there is fog as there was on the morning that I created this picture. And in fact, I was setting my camera up with a longer telephoto lens to photograph an old barn that was catching the early morning light. By the time I had put the lens on the camera the fog had completely concealed the barn so I panned the horizon for something else. The something else was this island of trees and the lone tree on the right. Perhaps I'll capture that old barn on another cold and foggy morning somewhere there on that desolate plain.
