Description
You have read those ads. Fixer upper, needs TLC, handyman special, needs some yard work. This forgotten old place needs a lot more than the kind of attention some bright faced realtor can envision. The years have slipped away and the souls that once crafted their lives here are long gone. It would take either someone with unlimited financial resources or the kind of person who knows how to do everything to save a place like this. In the meantime, it sits and waits. I used to pass by a place just like this for years. Suddenly, one night I came around a bend in the road and the sky was alight with flames. The people who owned the property had decided that there was no longer a reason to keep the old place so it went up in a bonfire of the vanities.

I wonder what its history is v
William Fields replied:
Nina, I don't know with any certainty. I imagine it was a family's home place and the younger generation didn't want to keep it up. They probably built a more modern house on the same property and didn't have the heart to tear the old one down. It happens a lot around here. I have painted a scene on a number of occasions that features a house down in a hollow with that exact story. No one has lived in it for years and none of the kids can bring themselves to do anything with it.

William, An interesting capture to be sure. I, too, lament seeing these abandoned structures fall to ruin, because of the loss of history and often times a better quality of workmanship and wood that is available today. Your composition utilizes the weathered textures to tell its story quite nicely. voted
William Fields replied:
Thank you Cheri. There is a lot of interest in historic preservation in our area and I've seen buildings in worse shape than this taken on as projects. I was worried about the picture because there was so many saplings and other shrubbery grown up in front of the building. I think in another month, this picture won't be possible. Thanks again
