Description
The old place just outside New Haven, Missouri is deserted. I was first drawn to it when I saw a bunch of jonquils in the yard. I started photographing the flowers and was not really very excited by anything I was getting. Often, I will walk around a site for a bit. I walk further away and back toward whatever is attracting my interest. I did that with this place and finally found what I was looking for. Or I should say, I found what I should have been looking for. The reach down the gravel road that runs by the place and the threatening sky beyond brought me into a mental place where the old farm made sense visually. I frequently try to shoot around power lines and poles. In this case, they added visual interest to the picture.
There was a time not so long ago when a lot places like this didn't have electricity. I had a friend who was helping an older woman who lived by herself on a farm get her house wired for the first time. He had pulled the cables and installed the fixtures, but ran out of time before he got all the light bulbs in place. When he came back the next day to put the bulbs in, he found that the poor old girl had stuffed all the fixtures with newspaper. She was fearful that the electricity would leak out into the room.

William, I like the way that you have processed this image. The grittiness and dust seem to be palpable as I view this long road fading into the distance. You descriptive information was interesting, too, because it reminds us of how "magical" electricity must have been for those who first experienced this lighting. voted
William Fields replied:
Cheri, thank you very much. Glad the piece spoke to you. I'm always glad when you read the side bars. It makes me feel that there is actually an audience! Thanks again.
