Description
There was a time when every where we went in America we took roads that looked like this. There were no interstates and darned few divided highways of any kind. There were a few parkways and turnpikes in the Northeastern States and in California, but in very few other places in North America. California built the first freeway in the 30s. The rest of the country drove down country lanes, through towns, over open road that went on forever. Driving was much more fun then. If you had a sports car or a motorcycle, it was close to driving heaven. When one looks at a list of the best drives or the most scenic drives in the U.S. there are very few that are divided highways. With good reason. A two lane blacktop requires the driver to slow down and drink in the scenery. It has twists and turns that would never be found on an interstate. It has places to stop that serve the best hamburger, fries and shake that you'll find anywhere. Places that have names you probably never heard before. Places owned by a mom and pop who have a local following for their pies and the chili they serve. You won't find a place called Cowan's or the Liberty Cafe or the Silver Dollar Saloon on Interstate 10. You can't find a home made anything for that matter. You surely won't be able to get a fried whole catfish or a steak from locally raised cattle either.
The anaconda of the two lane snakes across the land in a way that would befuddle civil engineers. Dynamite is rarely used to build such roads. There are low spots that flood and curves with soft shoulders and bridges that ice up sooner than the adjacent road surface. There is great food and greater people to be found in the backwaters and on the blue highways. I hope I see you there.
