Description
It was foggy yesterday morning. I grabbed my camera and went for a walk in the woods. We are blessed to live on 25 acres of forest adjacent to several hundred more acres that is all wooded. As I went about shooting I found new sprigs of clover peeping through the detritus of old leaves. There were patches of bright green mosses and new leaves unfolding everywhere. The broader landscapes were a treat with the fog and the early morning light.
Then I came upon these trees. It seemed very odd that there should be two trees with this bent shape in close proximity.
A friend suggested that the trees are in fact what is referred to as Indian Pointer Trees. Although, I was unable to locate any serious discussion of this topic on the internet, it does not mean that there is not some scholar somewhere who has mounds of research supporting the theory. I have not at this point been able to locate such a scholar. Most of the information on pointer trees available on the internet is supposition and word of mouth stories that have passed from one individual to another. There is a very attractive character to these stories as they are passed on by an oral tradition that was the main form of history capture among Amerinds.
So what do these trees point to? My house sits on a plot of land that is the highest home site in this part of Gasconade County. I have found arrowheads, stone axes and other evidence of native people having been here. The hilltop is the second bluff above the Missouri River and would not be a suitable location for a village. It is too far from the water. Traditionally, native people settled on the first bluff above the river so they would have immediate proximity to the water. Why then, is this hilltop a place where native people came. Was it for rituals, hunting or possibly a burial ground?
It is undeniable that they were here and that the location had a special significance to them. The two pointer trees then would seem to be logical signs of something of importance.
The native people placed importance and significance on the cardinal directions as well as two additional directions; up and inward. The four cardinal directions indicated the various powers of man. Each was identified by a color; red for east, blue for north, black for west and white for south. These colors did not indicate race but were nonetheless named as men. The red man held the most power and was in the east. Unetlanvhi, maker of us all or sometimes referred to as the great spirit lives in the sky above where the four directions meet. He sent four beings of different colors to be mediators between the people and Unetlanvhi. Tribute was given to the four men of colors who oversaw the four directions.
These two trees point east. It is possible that they are an astro-archeological symbol for the most important direction and that they indicate a sacred spot where rituals were performed.
